SEPTEMBER 29, 2020 HYBRID MEETING:  2020 Census

There are five Tuesdays in September, so this month we have a bonus Noon Hybrid Meeting on September 29th. David Wakely, the State Demographic Center’s Assistant Director of Census Outreach and Engagement, will deliver a presentation that will help attendees better understand the importance of the Census, address the challenges facing a complete count in 2020, and describe what the State, our partners, and Minnesotans can do to help make sure we have a full and accurate count in 2020.

Every ten years, the Constitutionally-mandated United States Census provides information that informs the apportionment of political representation at all levels of government and the allocation of resources by governments, non-profits, and the private sector.

The Minnesota State Demographic Center is helping coordinate a statewide effort composed of local governments, tribal nations, non-profit organizations, communities of faith, and other stakeholders to ensure a full and accurate count of all people living in Minnesota.

A successful effort will help retain Minnesota’s 8 Congressional seats and assure the proper allocation of over $15 billion in federal funds that help support Minnesota’s schools, hospitals, agriculture, first responders, roads, businesses, and households.

In 2010, Minnesota ranked #2 in census participation at 81%. Our goal is to be #1 in 2020.

You can join us in-person at the InterContinental Hotel or via Zoom for our Signature Lunch Meetings.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 ROTARY IN REVIEW: Gulad Ibrahim
Our 111th President Jason Bradshaw opened another "hybrid" of the club.  He thanked greeter Heidi Fisher.  Followed by Jason DeKeuster with an inspirational minute and the 4-way test.  Jason reflected on the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her leadership role in rights for women and disadvantaged populations.  His message -- Listen, really listen, to those that are disadvantaged.  In this way we can understand, sympathize, empathize and fix these inequities.  In short, apply the Rotarian 4-way test.
Ed Coleman asked to recognize visiting Rotarians and any guests.  Dana introduced Michael Lanistrom, a commercial property broker with deep St. Paul roots.  Michael is considering membership.  Ken Crabb recognized an online Rotarian guest who is the President of the Dublin, Ireland Rotary club.  He noted that the Dublin club is Rotary's first club outside of North America!

President Jason called for a moment of silence to honor the life of Club 10 member David Laird.  David's online funeral will be live streamed and recorded for later viewing.  David was recognized for his passion towards higher education in Minnesota.

Carolyn Will introduced the speaker, who happens to be a Rotary Peace Scholar graduate.  Scholar Guled Ibrahim spoke about how he incorporates his experience as a Rotary Peace Fellow into his work as an labor and employment attorney with a special focus on civil rights.  At 15 years old, he and family immigrated from Somalia, in 2005.  He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from the International School of Business in London, his law degree from William Mitchell Law School, and then capped off his degrees with the prestigious Rotary Peace Fellowship. During his 18 months at the University of Queensland Australia, Guled earned a Master’s of International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Guled spoke of support and encouragement from many Minnesota academics, some of whom were Rotarians or knew of the Rotary Peace Scholar opportunity.  He explained how competitive the Rotary selection procedure was, with candidates from some 96 countries.  Also significant was his internship at the UN, in service to the Somali ambassador.  Currently, Guled is a City of Minneapolis Civil Rights Department employee.

Dana Bruce spoke of membership.  Club 10 brings value and has seen new members in this crazy COVID year.  We can be proud of our hybrid meetings, exciting speakers, "5:01" online meetings to describe its club service projects and discuss St Paul community issues.  However, she needs your help.  As you nominate a club membership prospect, don't just mention a name to Dana.   Follow up with an encouraging invite, phone call or e-mail message, because only you know the history and interests of your prospect.  Dana distributed a handout with exciting new club membership options, including  < 40 years old, dynamic duo couples, and business/corporate categories.

Respectfully Submitted,

Stephen B. Young
