Please join us at the Intercontinental Hotel in Saint Paul on October 29th as we hear from Joe Nathan and Khalique Rogers of the Center for School Change. Khalique and Joe will discuss some encouraging developments in St Paul, and opportunities for Rotary Club members to easiy encourage and assist local youngsters. They will describe several pieces of legislation they helped move through the legislature that for example, provides millions of dollars to help public schools create or expand programs in which youngsters learn construction skills as they build homes for low income Minnesotans and Minnesotans experiencing homelessness. They'll also describe how building on students' strengths and interests is producing major improvements in public education -
Khalique Rogers recently was named by Twin Cities Business Journal as "one of 50 African Americans you should know in the Twin Cities." A graduate of St Paul's Gordon Parks Academy and St Paul College, he recently was named a member of the Humphrey Institute Policy Fellowship. Rogers experienced homelessness when he was a youngster in Mpls/St Paul. He has used that experience as well as his research on this issue to co-author articles in the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, MinnPost and an appearance on KSTP-TV. He has testified in the Minnesota Legislature a number of times and has helped convince legislators to allocate millions of dollars to help reduce youth and family homelessness. The St Paul College president asked him to "throw out the first ball" at St Paul College "Night at St Paul Saints." Rogers recently was named Executive Director of the Center for School Change.
Joe Nathan has been a public school teacher, administrator, researcher and advocate for more than 50 years. More than 25 state governors/legislatures have asked him to testify, and the National Governors Association asked him to coordinate a major project involving led by then Governor Bill Clinton and Gov Lamar Alexander. Nathan has been married for 50 years to a 33 year St Paul Public Schools teacher, and the Nathan's 3 children attended St Paul Public Schools, K-12. Nathan helped write the PSEO and Charter Public School legislation. For many years he was a columnist for the St Paul Pioneer Press. He currently writes a twice a month column for a number of suburban and rural Mn newspapers. He has appeared on more than 300 radio and television programs, including the "Today Show," "Good Morning America" and "CBS Morning News." He's founder of and now Senior Fellow at Center for School Change.
