Venomous snakebites kill more people annually than Dengue and rabies combined. Yet, few have heard about the public health crisis caused by snakebites. "Envenoming" is a disease of the poor, affecting mostly rural and indigenous populations in tropical countries. Patients have limited financial means and political voice, leading to the current state of neglect. Antivenom is scarce, clinicians are untrained on snakebite treatment, and communities often use harmful first aid practices. Simple steps can save thousands of lives.

Chloe Vasquez is a health economist and public health student at Macalester College. After her mother survived a venomous pit viper bite in 2020, she became interested in preventing avoidable deaths due to snakebites. Chloe has spent the past year across 11 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to learn more about the drivers of survival and death following snakebites.
