Karmit (pronounced “Karmeet”) Bulman is the incoming Executive Director for the Eastside Learning Center. She recently departed as the Executive Director for The Minnesota Alliance for Volunteer Advancement (MAVA). Karmit Bulman has served as managing attorney and executive director for non-profits including: The Minnesota Legal Services Coalition, The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, Avenues for Homeless Youth, Temple Israel, and the Conflict Resolution Center. Ms. Bulman is an adjunct professor at The University of Minnesota and Metropolitan State University. She is the author of The Conflict Consultant’s Handbook and other legal self-help booklets; she has also authored multiple articles and research reports on strategic volunteer engagement, including work on job equity for volunteer engagement professionals, race equity, tapping into the strengths of older volunteers and connecting formal and informal volunteers.
Ms. Bulman's career began as a legal services attorney, representing the needs of disenfranchised, disabled, and impoverished adults and children. She concentrated on youth, housing, employment, and family issues. She was a litigator for ten years before transitioning to serving as a non-profit executive director. Ms. Bulman has helped organizations move to the next level of growth for over 30 years. Her work has involved facilitation of collaborative processes, conflict assessment, coalition building, executive coaching and consulting, new business development, organizational turnaround, and revenue expansion. She has experience in fiscal management, program development, public and community relations, fund raising and non-profit infrastructure building. She has also served as a coach, mediator, group process facilitator, and turnaround specialist for a variety of local, national, and international organizations Ms. Bulman holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and legal studies from Brandies University and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University.
