AUGUST 13, 2019 LUNCH PROGRAM: Human Trafficking
FBI Agents Lisa Smith (Victim Specialist) and Richard Waller will be speaking to the mindset of a potential victim. How their life experience, sense of self-worth and sometimes even family involvement in trafficking can  make them think of being trafficked as a viable (or inevitable) reality. That coupled with the deep and extended work the FBI does to get rescued victims into safe, supportive environments.

Time: Noon - 1:15 PM
Location: InterContinental St. Paul Riverfront
JULY 30, ROTARY IN REVIEW: Roger Nielsen
We were warmly greeted by David Klein as he documented our attendance.  Michael-jon Pease called the meeting to order at 12:15 by reminding us that Rotary Connects the World is this year’s theme and that “St Paul Rotary strengthens our entire community and connects with the world through service, friendship and fun.”

Nancy Brady gave the inspirational minute using the Dare to Be format. She then led us in the Four Way Test.  Bill Collins introduce visiting Rotarians –Pat Selchow and Jodi Ellingson from the Apple Valley Club who urged us to buy a raffle ticket to support their Mission E4 humanitarian project in Haiti and Bill Foussard  from the White Bear Lake Club.  Guests included Teacher of the Year Andrea Ylonen and her father David and Mother-in-law Helen Maria, as well as Nigel Parry of Lowertown.info who reports on Lowertown news.

Michael-jon awarded Andrea Ylonen the Teacher of the Year Award from Heights Community School.  She had been unable to join us on our Education Day when the award was announced. In her comments, Andrea not only thanked us but related how teaching gene runs thru her family. She read a letter from a parent of a student thanking her and commenting on how she changed him for the better and that he is now an honor student.  She also noted that helped mentor a previous student after he finished school and then became her boss.

Jeni Zewiske introduced Roger Nielsen, though he hardly needs an introduction as he was a long time member of the club.  Roger spoke about his journey professionally to become a nationally recognized restorer and framer of works of art. Some of his many framing projects include: 2 controversial paintings in the State Capital, several in the History Center, a 10 x 10 foot frame for the George H W Bush Library, the James J Hill mansion, over 35 in the Minnesota Institute of Art and many more places.  Master Framers, Inc has over 350 molds for frames and can custom decorate any frame as desired. This includes not only adding decorative touches but also gilding the frame. The amount of time, detail and materials involved in these projects was fascinating.  But he pointed out that smaller projects are just as important.  These can include regular framing of pictures to creating unique displays of any number of objects.  He showed us pictures of a number of custom framing such as a Ferrari painting, back lit posters, arrowhead collection, army medals and more.  He finds these fun to do.
He also restores art work of all types.  We saw amazing pictures of before and after of his restoration projects. He described one painting where he found part of it had been overpainting and a new signature applied. After cleaning and reframing it, the owner was able to sell it to a museum for a profit.
Roger ran out of time, but wanted me to state that all are invited to Master Framers, Inc for a tour even if you do not have a specific project in mind. Having taken the tour, I would highly recommend it.

President Michael-jon reintroduced Nancy Brady who told us about herself. She has been a member 2.5 yrs. She really likes all the people in Rotary.  She supported strategic planning process and is happy we can blend the new and old. She is currently President of  Neighborhood House, Inc. where they help people find their way. She lives in Woodbury with her husband who is a pilot and her daughter who is a college senior  in  Boston and her 19 y/o Eagle Scout son attending school in Tucson. Nancy likes to alpine ski especially at Big Sky, read, work out, and get outside for walks. She is relearning Spanish. A little known fact was that she was a boy scout as a youth and was a leader in her Explorer Post.
